Shah Alam (Aug 13): In a significant electoral outcome, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition has maintained its foothold in the states of Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah, while also making substantial advances into Penang and Selangor.

The momentum of the much-hyped "green wave" — a phenomenon of rising religious conservatism used to describe PN's gains at the 15th general election — which drove PN to victory in 74 parliamentary seats during the 2022 general election, carried on into the state legislative elections held on Saturday (Aug 12).

PN emerged victorious with 43 seats in Kelantan, 32 seats in Terengganu, and 34 seats in Kedah. Its chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has declared that PN's performance in these states underscored its ability to resonate with voters and most importantly reaffirmed its standing in the Malay-Muslim heartland.

“Our win in Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan is proof that Malay voters are backing us. PN also won some mixed seats which shows we are getting the support of non-Malays as well. It has proven that these state assembly elections are a referendum against the unity government,” Muhyiddin told reporters after the election results were announced.
